QWERTY II

The basic idea is to increase the number of states each key has. Normally a key just has an in (on) and out (off) state.

I would like to create a keyboard using keys that all have 4 states: in (middle), up, down, out (off)

The Idea

I would like to hear all of your opinions on my plan.

To you guys, who re-label the layouts (like DVORAK) are defiantly on the right track with your projects, but I think it's impractical for a lot of people. I think that there are more people out there than you realize that want to switch, but don't have the time; myself included. This can be overcome by reducing the learning period. My idea is to keep the QWERTY layout, but give each button 4 states: an up, a down, an "in", and an off state. The home row, would have all of the letters. The "in" state would have the home row letters. The up state would take all of the letters above the home row. The down state would have all the letters below the home row. For Example:
In: a
Up: q
Down: z

Or

In: s
Up: w
Down: x

I have a rough draft layout that features extreme details, which would take chapters to explain in words.

I invite you to print it out and try it out. Note that it is smaller than the real thing. Its basically just one without a number pad.

Number Pad Version Blueprint

I took apart one of my keyboards. It was a very cheap keyboard. I reverse engineered the circuitry, and this should work perfectly with it. I can't guarantee that this will work on all keyboards, but I would guess that it would.
